The M3 may have shared a passing resemblance to the common-or-garden E30 3 Series when it broke cover at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985, but beneath those boxy rear arches lay wholesale mechanical changes introduced to homologate the model for Group A Touring Car racing. Advanced features included independent front and rear suspension with gas dampers, an anti-roll bar, and servo-assisted ventilated disc brakes—not to mention a wider track with beefed-up wheels and tyres. Most notable, however, was the Paul Rosche-designed S14 engine—a 2,302 cc double overhead cam “four” that produced 200 PS and made the M3 an overnight performance legend.
Built on 6 December 1988 and delivered new to Japan the following year, this tastefully specified example was finished in Alpine White with an Anthracite cloth interior, in addition to air conditioning and electric windows. At the time of cataloguing the odometer read just 7,133 kilometres, and it has spent recent years on static display as part of its consigning owner’s museum exhibition. As a result, potential buyers are encouraged to carry out a full mechanical inspection before returning this car to the road, while this lot is offered for sale without registration papers. The car is accompanied by a partial tool kit, selected manuals, and a spare wheel.
A true icon of 1980s performance excess, the M3 is an immensely collectible modern classic. This example presents a welcome opportunity to acquire a low mileage car in a desirable specification.
Bei seinem Erscheinen auf der Frankfurter IAA 1985 mag der neue M3 optisch doch Anklänge an den handelsüblichen 3er BMW E30 gezeigt haben, doch unter den ausgestellten hinteren Kotflügeln verbarg sich ausgefeilte Technik, um den M3 für die Gruppe A Tourenwagen-Meisterschaft homologieren zu können. Der M3 hatte Einzelradaufhängung rundum mit Gasdämpfern, Stabilisator, und servo-unterstützte belüftete Scheibenbremsen – von der breiteren Spur und den breiteren Reifen einmal ganz abgesehen. Am bemerkenswerten jedoch war der von Motorenpapst Paul Rosche entworfene S14 Motor, ein 2.302 cm³ großer Vierzylinder mit zwei obenliegenden Nockenwellen, der mit seinen 200 PS den M3 über Nacht zur Legende machte.
Dieses am 6. Dezember 1988 gebaute alpinweiße Exemplar mit anthrazitfarbenem Stoff wurde neu nach Japan ausgeliefert und verfügt über eine Klimaanlage und elektrische Fensterheber. Zum Zeitpunkt der Drucklegung zeigte der Tachometer lediglich 7.133 km an. Da dieser Wagen eine Zeitlang als statisches Ausstellungsstück in der Museumssammlung des Einlieferers verbracht hat, wird Käufern empfohlen, den Wagen einer umfänglichen technischen Überprüfung zu unterziehen, sollte eine Wiederinbetriebnahme im Straßenverkehr vorgesehen sein; allerdings wird dieses Los ohne Zulassungspapiere angeboten.
