The year 1975 marked the beginning of the rear-wheel drive BMW 3-series that continues on over four decades later. The second-generation E30 3-series ran from 1982-1991 with the BMW Motorsport division – also known simply as M, working up a homologated production version of the 3-series Group A Touring Car known as the M3 in 1988. Boxed fenders and a rear spoiler joined a worked suspension. The 4-cylinder engine produced over 60 horsepower more than the base 3-series inline 6-cylinder. The formula was so successful that the U.S.-specification M3 underwent little change from 1988-1991. This 1990 BMW M3 with just 75,000 miles on the odometer waits for its next driver.
The 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine was equipped with a dual overhead camshaft cylinder head with four valves per cylinder and multi-port fuel injection feeding individual throttle bodies. The naturally aspirated 4-cylinder was rated for 192 horsepower at 6,750 RPM and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 RPM. The M3 engine is mated to a 5-speed Getrag manual transmission. An automatic transmission was not available for the M3. The rear wheels get engine power through clutch-type limited slip rear differential with 4.10:1 ratio gears. Suspension, brakes and wheels were uprated to M specifications.
The Eighties-perfect boxed fender body with its dozen M3-specific body panels was repainted once into its original Alpinweiss color. The original tan interior is centered by a pair sport front seats with adjustable thigh height and BMW Motorsport steering wheel designed for maximum control and clear view of the 8,000 RPM speedometer and 160 MPH speedometer. Original glass throughout delivers period correct views of the road through the tall greenhouse. This 1990 BMW M3 is free of rust having spent its life in the southern United States and comes with a clean and accident-free Carfax report.
