On the screen, James Bond has re-invented himself countless times, and that’s what Aston Martin did in 2001 with the launch of an all-new flagship model to drive the brand forward and upwards in the new millennium. Though the lines of the V12 Vanquish paid homage to the muscular and mighty DB4GT Zagato, the newcomer bristled with leading-edge engineering and forward-thinking construction techniques. Its backbone was quite literally a carbon-fibre backbone, developed by those clever people at Lotus, who know more than most about adding lightness.
Combined with the heat-cured bonded aluminum monocoque it resulted in a lightweight structure of exceptional rigidity, providing the chassis engineers the ideal platform to develop an advanced independent suspension system with totally uncompromised ride and handling. Power came from the 6.0L 48-valve V-12 that debuted in 1998. Now uprated and lightened for better throttle response, it developed a very beefy 460 HP. The Formula 1-derived electronic engine management system provided drive-by-wire throttle control with gear changes enabled by an automated 6-speed sequential clutchless manual transmission with paddle control—another first for a production car.
And, of course, there was ABS with advanced electronic brake distribution. In short, the Vanquish was conceived to set new performance benchmarks for the company—and it did, with 60 MPH coming up in 4.5 seconds on the way to a max of 190 MPH. Car and Driver magazine considered the V12 Vanquish both “worthy of the marque’s heritage and serious alternative to the top Ferrari.” Then, Aston Martin got a whole lot more serious in 2004 in the form of the Vanquish S with 520 HP, with a revised body with lower drag coefficient, stiffer suspension and larger brakes part of the now standard Sports Dynamic Package. The result: 200 MPH.
With a limited production run of 1,086, the V12 Vanquish S is an extremely exclusive machine. Yet this 2005 ultimate V12 Vanquish S is distinguished even further, not merely by its Jet Black livery, which gives it an almost predatory presence, but more so by virtue of its mere 12,375 miles. In this Vanquish S you’ll conquer just about everything on the road, apart from traffic cops.
