Having covered a mere 9,610 miles from new, this 2010 Aston Martin Rapide is one of only a handful built before the Rapide S replaced it in 2013. A ZF Touchtronic II 6-speed automatic transmission harnesses the 470 HP produced by the 6.0L V-12 and delivers it to the rear wheels with the expected swiftness and efficiency of a supercar, but with the decided smoothness of an Aston Martin. Presented in Jet Black with an interior swathed in Obsidian leather, only the stitching contrasts—even the interior trim is Piano Black and the suede-like alcantara headliner is black.
The dark demeanor lends a truly businesslike sense to an already serious sporting car, but it also allows for the details to shine through. With power steering, a sport-tuned adaptive suspension, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, Bilstein shocks and double-wishbone front and rear suspension, the Rapide handles the horsepower effortlessly and makes the most of curves and corners with ease. Once in a while, a company produces a car that’s remarkably inimitable, something truly special, usually some kind of roadster or ultra-sports car, but in the case of Aston Martin, in 2010, the 4-door Rapide hit the scene. Bearing an obvious family resemblance, it broke tradition with four doors, bringing Aston Martin head-to-head in the super-saloon market with a multitude of ultra-performance sedans.
It held its own very well, offering top speeds nearing 190 MPH, sprints from 0-60 MPH in the high 4-second range, and a rare blend of muscular and svelte, graceful and athletic. “Top Gear” compared it to a number of super saloons and considered the Rapide the ballerina of the group, strong yet beautiful, and boldly understated.
