Making good on the claim that the Alfa Romeo 1900 was the “family car that wins races”, in 1954 the marque released a new, more potent version of the model. The engine bore was increased by two millimetres, upping displacement to 1,975 cc, and twin-Solex carburettors were installed, all resulting in the new Super Sprint Coupé producing 115 horsepower.
According to the accompanying Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificato di Origine—which also confirms its matching-numbers chassis and engine—this car was produced on 30 May 1954 and sold in Vicenza on 29 October of the same year. It was registered with the licence plate “VI 28087”, which it still wears. The Classiche certificate also verifies that the car left the Alfa Romeo factory in Bianco Avorio, which it retains today. This Super Sprint Coupé was restored to a high standard in 2019, with the work completed by a leading restorer in northern Italy. The work not only involved a bare-metal repaint, but also an interior retrim and engine rebuild, leaving the car in the stunning condition in which it is presented here.
An impressive selection of images documents the car’s rotisserie restoration, while the car is also accompanied by supporting documentation from RIAR (Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo), Alfa Romeo Museo Storico, further to its historical Estratto Cronologico papers that list its limited number of owners from new. Should its next owner wish to take advantage of its Mille Miglia eligibility, there can be fewer better ways to take in the beautiful surroundings of Italy than from behind the wheel of this thrilling Alfa Romeo.
En capitalisant sur le slogan qui voulait que l'Alfa Romeo 1900 soit "la familiale qui remporte des courses", la marqua en lança en 1954 une nouvelle version, plus puissante. Avec un alésage majoré de deux millimètres, son moteur était passé à 1 975 cm3 et, grâce à ses deux carburateurs Solex, il offrait désormais 115 ch à la nouvelle Super Sprint Coupé.
L'exemplaire proposé, le châssis 01804, est l'une des environ 480 Alfa Romeo 1900 C Super Sprint Coupés de la deuxième série carrossées par Touring. Selon le Classiche Certificato di Origine Alfa Romeo qui l'accompagne, et qui confirme que ses numéros de châssis et de moteur concordent, cette voiture est sortie d'usine le 30 mai 1954 et a été vendue à Vicenza le 29 octobre suivant. Elle y a été immatriculée "28087 VI", numéro qui est toujours le sien. Le certificat Classiche confirme aussi qu'elle était de couleur blanc ivoire Bianco Avorio, celle qu'elle arbore toujours.
Cette Super Sprint Coupé a été restaurée en 2019 avec exigence, par les soins d'un important restaurateur du nord de l'Italie. Les travaux ne se sont pas limités à une peinture après complet décapage, mais ils ont aussi porté sur un regarnissage intérieur et une réfection du moteur qui ont amené la voiture dans l'état éblouissant qui est actuellement le sien.
Un impressionnant choix de photos illustre la restauration de cette voiture, qui est par ailleurs accompagnée de documents émanant du RIAR (Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo) et de l'Alfa Romeo Museo Storico, qui complètent son historique Estratto Chronologico énumérant le petit nombre de propriétaires qu'elle a eus depuis l'origine. Si son prochain détenteur veut tirer parti de son éligibilité aux Mille Miglia, il constatera qu'on peut difficilement mieux profiter des merveilleux paysages italiens qu'au volant de cette fascinante Alfa Romeo.
