With four large Borgo pistons and a re-bore to reach 747 cc, a home-made intake pipe to bolt on a Weber 32 carburettor and a "competizione" air filter and a custom-made marmita (Abarth's trademark), the Fiat 600 Gran Turismo derivazione Abarth wasted no time in making a splash in the 750 class competitions and on the road!

In April 1956, at the Salone dell'automobile in Turin, Carlo Abarth presented a small, elegant Zagato saloon car based on the Fiat 600 platform and its famous 750 preparation. This first version, called the 750 GT, was distinguished by the famous double bubble roof that Zagato loved and which gave the model its credentials, with a three-peat in the 750 class at the 1957 Mille Miglia and numerous victories in the 750 class on the Old Continent and in the United States, where the bombshell was a great success in the SCCA (Sports Cars Club of America) championship. With 44 hp and 535 kg on the scale, the little scorpion all in aluminium propels its occupants to 160 km/h.

In 1958, a bialbero version named Record Monza (with a home-made double ACT cylinder head that allows to get 61 hp out of the little 4-cylinder) even promises 180 km/h ! In 1959 and 1960, to complete the series, twenty-five more cars were produced by Abarth and Zagato, with steel bodies and aluminium doors. Called Sestriere (in reference to the highly selective Sestriere rally, which took place around the eponymous ski resort and where the Zagato 750s won in 1958 and 1959), and featuring a "flat" roof and two enormous scoops on the rear bonnet, these were the rarest of the line. The Abarth 750 Sestriere chassis no. 756 808 was probably sold new in the USA, like most of the production.

The car was found in California in the early 2000s, and bought by a British enthusiast who had it repatriated to England. The complete and sound base was disassembled and a first body work was undertaken, notably on the aluminium doors. The current owner bought the car as is, in 2014, and undertook a competitive restoration at the renowned Bernhard Arnold (Arnold Classic): the photos that accompany the car's file testify to a work of rare quality. As soon as it is finished, the car will be sent to Abarth in Italy for certification. The experts from the Classiche department could not but validate the quality of the restoration and the attention to detail.

It's true that our test drive of this endearing Abarth was surprising: the car is per formant, but - above all - the orders and reactions confirm a "new" restoration. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful Abarth 750s available for sale. A car that is just waiting to hit the road, and why not shine again in historic competitions, notably the Tour Auto, where it is eligible. The matching engine of the car, also refurbished, and installed in a custom-made frame, will be available from the seller after the sale.
