Smart has taken an unconventional approach to promoting its upcoming Smart #2 by transforming city walls into giant teaser canvases. Ahead of the model's global debut in October 2026, murals featuring the compact two-seater have appeared in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, and Melbourne, with Berlin and Paris set to join the campaign soon.
Instead of revealing the car through traditional advertising, Smart chose street art to emphasize the Smart #2's role as a vehicle designed for urban life. According to the company's marketing team, the campaign celebrates the close connection between city mobility and street culture while building anticipation for the return of one of Smart's most iconic concepts.
Each mural was created by a different artist. Zhu Bin produced the artwork in Shanghai, the Parents Parents collective painted the Hong Kong version, Martin Ron created the Buenos Aires mural, and Georgia Laurie designed the Melbourne installation.
Could the Melbourne artwork reveal the production model almost entirely? The mural showcases several design details, including a contrasting black roof and pillars, conventional door handles, rounded headlights, large front bumper air channels surrounding a rectangular intake, and distinctive eight-spoke wheels.
Smart also confirmed that the Smart #2 was designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, which aimed to preserve the spirit of the legendary Smart ForTwo while staying faithful to the silhouette of the Concept #2 unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show 2026.
Beneath the body, the car uses Geely's Electric Compact Architecture (ECA) with rear-wheel drive, providing global safety compliance and excellent maneuverability for crowded city streets.
Previously released specifications indicate a 35.7 kWh battery, an estimated WLTP driving range of around 300 km, DC fast charging from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes, and an exceptionally tight 6.95-meter turning circle.
Will Smart's artistic marketing campaign attract more buyers? And can the Smart #2 help reverse the brand's recent slowdown in China after June 2026 deliveries fell 38.4% year over year to 1,797 vehicles? The full production model will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show this October.
