Mercedes Faces U.S. Uncertainty

Mercedes-Benz could face unexpected challenges in the U.S. market after a new proposal advanced by the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee. The legislation would prohibit the sale of vehicles from automakers with more than 15% ownership by Chinese entities, potentially affecting several global manufacturers.
As things stand, Mercedes-Benz falls within that threshold. Geely Chairman Eric Li Shufu controls approximately 9.7% of the company through an investment firm, while BAIC Group owns another 9.98%, giving Chinese investors a combined stake of nearly 20%.
Despite the proposal, an immediate ban appears unlikely. According to Reuters, committee chairman Senator Ted Cruz stated that the bill still requires changes before it could become law and emphasized that lawmakers are not seeking to prohibit Mercedes-Benz sales in the United States. Senator Bernie Moreno also noted that, if the legislation is ultimately approved in its current form, Mercedes would have until 2030 to comply. The company could also qualify for waivers that would allow it to continue operating under certain conditions.
Reuters further reported that Cruz claimed General Motors supports the proposal because removing Mercedes from the market could strengthen Cadillac's competitive position. However, Cruz reiterated that banning Mercedes is not the goal of the legislation.
The proposal follows recent regulatory actions affecting other automakers linked to Chinese ownership. Polestar, which is backed by Geely, was recently informed that it will no longer be allowed to sell vehicles in the U.S. beginning in 2027. Meanwhile, Volvo, despite also having Geely ownership, received approval to continue sales provided it complies with specific regulatory requirements.
