Mercedes-AMG has officially retired its legendary high-output turbocharged four-cylinder engine, replacing it with an advanced three-motor electric powertrain in the all-new CLA45 4Matic+ sedan and Shooting Brake. The new performance duo marks AMG’s entry into a new era, borrowing cutting-edge technology directly from the flagship AMG GT four-door EV.
Instead of a gasoline engine, the compact models use three axial-flux electric motors that produce a combined 680 horsepower / 689 PS and an astonishing 944 lb-ft / 1,280 Nm of instant torque. Power is delivered through a sophisticated variable all-wheel-drive system, allowing the 94-kWh battery-powered EV to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.7 seconds. Despite tipping the scales at more than 5,000 lbs / 2,267 kg, AMG promises impressive performance and responsiveness.
To preserve some of the brand’s traditional character, Mercedes-AMG has introduced the new “AMGFORCE S+” mode, which recreates the sound and shifting sensation of the previous turbocharged four-cylinder engine through electronic simulation. The new 800-volt electrical architecture also supports ultra-fast 330-kW charging, allowing the battery to recharge from 10% to 80% in only 22 minutes.
Do you think this powerful tri-motor electric setup can truly replace the excitement and character of AMG’s iconic turbocharged four-cylinder?
