However, disputes between both parties led to Hayek taking the project to Mercedes-Benz. Hayek founded Micro Compact Car AG, or MCC, in 1994 with Daimler-Benz and SMH SA, or the Société Suisse de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie, to build the car that would be known as Smart, an acronym for Swatch Mercedes Art. Interestingly, however, Daimler also fussed over the idea of a hybrid-drive car, causing Hayek and Swatch to abandon the project. Subsequently, Daimler has gone on to produce three generations of Smart cars, expanding the brand into four doors and cabriolets from the original two door variant. They were proven very safe, extremely efficient, reasonably comfortable, competent performers and popular with a variety of demographics. The third generation debuted in 2014 and sustains today. This 2017 Fortwo Cabriolet has traveled only 52 miles from new and is powered by a turbocharged, multiport fuel-injected 1.0L DOHC inline 3-cylinder engine with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
