In other words, he knew what the American market demanded and pushed European manufacturers to new heights in their efforts to meet the needs of spirited and well-heeled American driving enthusiasts. And it’s in that very same spirit that Aston Martin unveiled the DB AR1 Zagato roadster at the 2003 Los Angeles Auto Show. Yet the AR1—or American Roadster to give it its full name—was way more exclusive than the above-mentioned forbears; unlike its predecessors, it was produced only for the U.S. market and with a production run of just 99, less than one tenth of either the Gullwing or 300SL roadster. Harkening back to the immortal DB4 GT Zagato, Aston Martin once again commissioned the Italian carrozzeria to create a hand-crafted machine that evoked and amplified the original in styling and presence, with the powerful haunches and slatted grille among the unmistakable signature notes. As for performance, the DB AR1 Zagato’s 435 HP 48-valve 5.9L GT-spec version of the Vanquish V12 shot the roadster to 60 MPH in 4.9 seconds on its way to a max of 186 MPH. Back in 2003, that very limited production was taken up by connoisseurs within three months, with eight put aside for European Aston aficionados.
