Chiefly impressive was the use of the 383 CI V-8 engine and 3-speed automatic transmission by Chrysler. The duo offered effortless acceleration at any speed and easily powered the numerous accessories. By 1971, the Interceptor featured several improvements, including the use of Chrysler’s even more potent 440 CI V-8, which would beget the era of the Interceptor III. Continuing to give customers reason to think about Interceptor, in March of 1974, a convertible was introduced. The III would be the final iteration of the marque, and the last car rolled out of the factory in September 1976. In that roughly two-year span, just 467 Interceptor convertibles were built. This Interceptor III, now sporting an older restoration, was originally constructed in March 1976 and delivered new to the United States. The 440 CI V-8 is fitted with a dual exhaust system and the TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. The Medium Blue Metallic paint is tempered with subtle brightwork, such as front and rear bumpers with guards and wide rocker moldings. The beige interior and fawn-colored convertible top contrast beautifully with the exterior color. Equipped with power steering and Dunlop power-assisted 4-wheel hydraulic disc brakes, the capable chassis features a front suspension of independent coil springs and a rear suspension with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Passengers revel in an interior splashed with wood-grain trim, bucket seats, power windows, a Becker Europa pushbutton cassette radio, an in-dash clock, Jaeger instrumentation, air conditioning and tinted glass. Priced around $26,000 in 1976, the Jensen Interceptor was considered competition for a variety of exclusive, high-end vehicles, including the Aston Martin V-8, the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Corniche, the Iso Grifo and the Jaguar E-Type and XJS. Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis, Cliff Richard and many others gravitated to the Interceptor for its performance, exotic looks, exclusivity and performance. https://www.mecum.com/lots/1149438/1976-jensen-interceptor-iii-convertible/

    Jensen Interceptor III Convertible, 1975

Chassis No.: 23111623 • Exterior: Red • Interior: Tan • Body: Convertible • Extensive restoration • Carrozzeria Touring-designed body • Late production example • Laser straight Red finish • Mopar 440 CI V-8 engine • Headers and dual exhaust • Proper Jensen alloy valve covers • Torqueflite automatic transmission • Independent front suspension • Salisbury rear differential • Connolly tan leather interior • Aircraft-inspired switchgear • Moto-Lita wood 3-spoke steering wheel • Tan Everflex convertible top with boot • Jaeger instruments • Restored GKN alloy wheels The legacy of sporty European luxury cars comes alive with this offering, a 1975 Jensen Interceptor III Convertible. This unique group of vehicles was created along the lines of a fine GT touring vehicle rather than a racing-derived sports model, featuring spectacular interior appointments, excellent chassis and body structuring and reliable powertrains. Moreover, this example is thoroughly refreshed inside and out, showing the level of artisanship that has helped make these cars popular among their enthusiasts. The Jensen marque created the Interceptor line from 1966 to 1976 at the Kelvin Way factory near Birmingham, England, with the body designed by the Italian firm Carrozzeria Touring. Standard equipment was extensive—power windows, power steering, air conditioning and reclining front bucket seats among them. The Series III models began in 1971, and the convertible was offered only between 1974 and ‘76, the year the company ceased production. Under the hood is the big Chrysler 440 CI RB-series engine, refined during the 1960s muscle-car era and still offering ample torque and horsepower to satisfy the needs of the most demanding owners, yet easily maintained with over-the-counter components. In the Jensens of this era, the engine was backed by the A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic, another result of development in the era. Designed in cabriolet form with four seats in the open air once the electrically-operated Everflex top is secured under the fitted leather boot, the body layout bespeaks of the quality that went into these cars. Intimately fitted steel components mounted to a well-designed chassis are covered in deep rich red paint. Inside, tan leather covers much of the interior, with woolen carpet, an insulated-and-lined top, Jaeger round-face gauges and aircraft-style toggle controls adding to the sophistication. To this, a Moto-Lita 3-spoke woodgrain steering wheel and more modern stereo upgrades have been added. The beautiful 5-spoke GKN alloy wheels and fresh Goodyear tires complete it. The Interceptor III logo in the grille tells the story to those who know, and the plush amenities and ample power will prove its value. https://www.mecum.com/lots/300036/1975-jensen-interceptor-iii-convertible/
