The resulting 912 was introduced soon after the 911 was first available for sale. Using the same 4-cylinder engine as that of the outgoing 356 SC (Super 90), the 912 was a competent road car with a 115 MPH top end, excellent fuel economy and outstanding handling characteristics. A strong seller in Europe as intended, the 912 surprisingly outsold the 911 in America by nearly two to one. In 1967, it earned Car and Driver magazine’s Reader’s Choice award, and while never intended for racing, a 912 won the Rally Poland and class that year in the European Rally Championship. The 912 also enjoyed use by Dutch and German police forces. Production of the 912 continued until late 1969, but a new 912 E replaced the 914 in 1976, pending the release of the new 924. Today, the 912 is a respected and important part of the Porsche legacy that has emerged from the 911’s shadow. This fascinating 1965 Porsche 912 is one of just two known remaining 1965 prototype 912 models in existence. It was not endowed with a chassis number characteristic of a production-type car built for public sale. Rather, it carries a “13-prefix” chassis number, the rarest of all such Porsche production chassis identification numbers, and it is one of only seven Porsche factory 13-prefix internal design process chassis numbers remaining. The original 356 T-6 B chassis plate also carries a raised-letter “912” for the model identification. The factory Kardex build sheet notes the car as “Experimental” with Chassis No. 13-415, and the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity identifies Chassis No. 13-415 as a “PROTOTYPE.” The original matching engine number is listed on the Kardex and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. The product of an exacting and documented, bare-metal restoration down to the Nadella axles, this 912 Prototype features a Light Ivory exterior finish, a black leather interior and retains its original matching-numbers 356SC-specification air-cooled, flat 4-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed manual transmission.
