Mazda Cosmo Series 1 Coupe, 1968

Chassis No.: L10A10233 Auction: Monterey 2017 Auction date: August 19, 2017 Lot No.: F92 $44,000 | Sold • Exterior: White • Interior: Black • Body: Coupe • 1 of 343 Series 1 coupes produced • Restored in Japan in 2009 • Imported to the United States in 2010 • Gen II 1.3L Rotary engine • Dual Weber downdraft carburetors • Performance headers • Custom stainless exhaust • Upgraded RX7 5-speed transmission • Upgraded RX7 4-piston front disc brakes • Upgraded cooling system and radiator • Auxiliary gauges • Era-appropriate 15 inch Wantanabe wheels • Wood steering wheel • MazdaSpeed Houndstooth sport seats After a prototype was introduced at the 1963 Tokyo Motor Show, the Mazda Cosmo entered production in 1967 as the first mass-production car powered by a two-rotor Wankel rotary engine. Fewer than 350 of the Series I Cosmo L110A cars were produced, and a correspondingly low number remain scattered around the world. Series II Cosmo L110B production began in 1968, with a total of just 1,519 hand-built Cosmo sport coupes being produced through 1972. Restored and modified in Japan, and then imported to the U.S. in 2010, this unique and rare 1968 Cosmo Sport Coupe combines its period-defining Italian-influenced style with a curated selection of genuine Mazda and Mazdaspeed performance upgrades. The Series I Mazda Cosmos were powered by a 110 HP 1.0L rotary engine that lent the 110S its export designation. The original engine was upgraded with a 1.3L two-rotor Gen II Mazda 13B rotary engine equipped with dual Weber downdraft carburetors, upgraded dual spark-plug ignition, performance header extractors and high-flow stainless-steel exhaust for 185 HP. The rotary engine is backed up by a 5-speed transmission and 4-piston-caliper front disc brakes sourced from a Mazda RX7. An aluminum radiator and electric fan help the upgraded cooling system match increased power output. The Series 1 body, with its wide-mouth grille and long rear deck, is finished in its original white color with covered headlights, chrome bumpers and dual bullet-style mirrors adding race-inspired accents to Bertone-influenced space-age style. The original speedometer and tachometer are joined by supplemental gauges and a contemporary audio-system head unit on the dash. Bolstered Mazdaspeed bucket seats and a handcrafted wood steering wheel wait for the driver to take control. The Cosmo rides on era-appropriate 15 inch Watanabe wheels outfitted with Japanese made Yokohama tires. https://www.mecum.com/lots/300065/1968-mazda-cosmo-series-1-coupe/

Mazda Cosmo Sport Series II, 1970

Chassis No.: L10B10897 Auction: Glendale 2021 Auction date: March 20, 2021 Lot No.: F124 $73,700 | Sold • Exterior: White • Interior: Black/houndstooth • The first twin-rotor production car • Rare factory air conditioning • Right hand drive • 982cc/128 HP Wankel engine • Single Zenith carburetor • 5-speed manual transmission • Independent front suspension • De Dion rear axle • Servo-assisted front disc and rear brakes • Repainted approximately 20 years ago • Original unrestored interior • Dealer-installed Hitachi 8-track stereo with Clarion speakers • Spare and original jack This Series II Mazda Cosmo is an exciting find any way it’s looked at. Seldom seen on the market, the Mazda Cosmo is often the car credited with saving Mazda. This one is equipped with rare factory air conditioning, a dealer-installed Hitachi 8-track stereo with Clarion speakers, a spare and the original jack. A right-hand drive car, it has an unrestored interior and was repainted about 20 years ago. Very show worthy, the Mazda Cosmo was one of the earliest cars to feature a two-rotor Wankel engine. The small, two-seat coupe was designed by Heiji Kobayashi and boasted a remarkably sporty, futuristic style that sustained the revolutionary image Mazda was trying to establish with the new car. Engineering was overseen by Kenichi Yamamoto, which was highly natural for him as he served as the supervisor of a 47-engineer team known as “47 Ronin” established in 1961 to produce a commercial version of the Wankel rotary engine for Mazda. With cutting-edge styling and a cutting-edge engine, the Cosmo was set to catapult Mazda into spotlight as one of the most innovative automobile manufacturers in the world. The Cosmo was introduced to the public at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, with production commencing in 1967 and spanning two generations with the Series 1 of 1967 to 1968 and the Series II of 1968 to 1972. The Series II featured a longer wheelbase, minor styling revisions, a rotary engine enlarged to 982cc with 128 HP, a single Zenith carburetor, servo-assisted brakes, front discs, an independent front suspension, De Dion rear axle, 15-inch wheels and a 5-speed manual transmission. More interior room and a more comfortable ride were some of the results of the lengthier wheelbase and larger wheels, while the larger engine and extra gear in the transmission provided a more linear power band and more relaxed cruising at speed. Capable of over 120 MPH, the Series II proved what an exceptional platform the Cosmo provided. Only about six Series IIs were initially imported into the U.S., and only 833 Series IIs were ever built. A fantastic piece of Mazda history, this Mazda Cosmo is a magnificent opportunity to acquire a massively rare piece of automotive history. https://www.mecum.com/lots/453371/1970-mazda-cosmo-sport-series-ii/
