This Series II Mazda Cosmo is an exciting find any way it’s looked at. Seldom seen on the market, the Mazda Cosmo is often the car credited with saving Mazda. This one is equipped with rare factory air conditioning, a dealer-installed Hitachi 8-track stereo with Clarion speakers, a spare and the original jack. A right-hand drive car, it has an unrestored interior and was repainted about 20 years ago. Very show worthy, the Mazda Cosmo was one of the earliest cars to feature a two-rotor Wankel engine. The small, two-seat coupe was designed by Heiji Kobayashi and boasted a remarkably sporty, futuristic style that sustained the revolutionary image Mazda was trying to establish with the new car.

Engineering was overseen by Kenichi Yamamoto, which was highly natural for him as he served as the supervisor of a 47-engineer team known as “47 Ronin” established in 1961 to produce a commercial version of the Wankel rotary engine for Mazda. With cutting-edge styling and a cutting-edge engine, the Cosmo was set to catapult Mazda into spotlight as one of the most innovative automobile manufacturers in the world. The Cosmo was introduced to the public at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show, with production commencing in 1967 and spanning two generations with the Series 1 of 1967 to 1968 and the Series II of 1968 to 1972.

The Series II featured a longer wheelbase, minor styling revisions, a rotary engine enlarged to 982cc with 128 HP, a single Zenith carburetor, servo-assisted brakes, front discs, an independent front suspension, De Dion rear axle, 15-inch wheels and a 5-speed manual transmission. More interior room and a more comfortable ride were some of the results of the lengthier wheelbase and larger wheels, while the larger engine and extra gear in the transmission provided a more linear power band and more relaxed cruising at speed. Capable of over 120 MPH, the Series II proved what an exceptional platform the Cosmo provided.

Only about six Series IIs were initially imported into the U.S., and only 833 Series IIs were ever built. A fantastic piece of Mazda history, this Mazda Cosmo is a magnificent opportunity to acquire a massively rare piece of automotive history.
