The coupling of old-school touches and modern flair is what this all-steel 1940 Willys Custom Coupe is all about. The diminutive business coupe released just before World War II has long been the basis for Rod and race car builds, and this example features both performance upgrades and special equipment added for enjoyment. Beginning with an Art Morrison chassis, the power program starts with a detailed Chrysler Gen 2 472 CI Hemi V-8 engine underneath the hood. This stroker mill is topped with a polished BDS 8-71 supercharger and fuel injection, with headers feeding side-exit exhaust that comes out from under the running boards in front of the rear wheel openings.
Behind the engine is a TCI A727 3-speed automatic transmission and Strange 9-inch differential featuring 32-spline street/strip axles. Suspension changes include a 4-link rear suspension working with the line-lock and trans-brake, plus 4-wheel disc brakes. The black body features a sectioned hood and suicide doors, with the fenders raked over the front wheels for that down-low look. Inside, there are now two-tone monogrammed leather seat covers, power windows and locks, Vintage Air, a custom dash with myriad gauges, a Clarion FM touch-screen with rearview camera, a console with pro-grade shifter and toggle panel, and a roll cage.
Indeed, the stereo with its MP3, DVD, CD and Sirius accessibility is complemented by a trunk-based entertainment center with a flat-screen TV. Other outside touches include the teardrop-shaped blower opening to match the teardrop-shaped headlamp bezels, a third brake light, removed bumpers and shaved door handles. The final touch is the offset-size, slotted, mag-style wheels with BF Goodrich tires mounted up front and wide-treaded Mickey Thompsons in the rear. In total, this black steel beast is a great flashback to the classic Rodding era with appointments that bring it into the 21st century.
