When the boxy, Beetle-based Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter first arrived on American shores in 1949, its effect and influence was immediate, as there was truly nothing else like it on American roads. Using standard Beetle components, it was easy to operate and maintain, quickly gaining worldwide acceptance as a highly effective, albeit utilitarian, way to transport cargo and passengers.

Eventually dubbed the “Microbus,” Volkswagen’s unique Transporter was relentlessly refined through 1967 and then revised for 1968, evolving into several different and very practical vehicles including single- and double-cab pickup trucks. With its combination of economy, practicality and anti-establishment flair, the Transporter, in all of its guises, was of course an instant hit with the Baby Boomers growing up in the 1960s and early 1970s.

This Type 2 Double-Cab pickup truck shows about 78,100 miles today and carries an interesting early history. It was acquired by the current owner from a Chicago-area Ferrari dealer, which utilized the vehicle as a fun and unique “depot hack” to carry its clients and their luggage between the dealership and the local airport terminals. It was reportedly maintained in virtually perfect condition, as the dealer-principal was predictably not willing to risk a breakdown with his elite customers on board the vehicle.

Approximately seven years ago, the pickup was completely restored, and it remains very presentable today. Power is provided by a classic VW air-cooled flat four that offers heightened performance over the stock specification, with upgrades including a displacement increase to approximately 1,850 cc and dual Weber twin-choke carburetors. As offered, it is complete with desirable accessories including a canvas “Conestoga Wagon” bed cover, a rear tonneau cover, a front-end bra, a roof-mounted cargo rack and a stereo. It is certainly one of the finest examples available.
