In May 1974, Volkswagen presented the first-generation Golf as a modern front-wheel drive, long-range replacement for the Volkswagen Beetle. Later Golf variations included the Golf GTi 'hot hatch' introduced in June 1976, a diesel-powered version from September 1976, the Jetta notchback saloon in October 1979 and, from the end of 1979, the Golf cabriolet built by Karmann. September 1983 saw the introduction of the second-generation Volkswagen Golf, which grew slightly in wheelbase and dimensions, while retaining, in a more rounded form, the Mk. I's overall look. There was not a Golf Mk. II-based cabriolet model, instead, the Mk. I cabriolet was continued over the Mk.
II's entire production run. Karmann, in Osnabrück, was until 2009 the largest independent motor vehicle manufacturing company in Germany. For more than a century, it has undertaken various roles, from design to production and assembly of components for various automobile manufacturers including Chrysler, Porsche and other marques in the Volkswagen Group.
This wonderfully original Mk.I Golf GTi cabriolet was first registered on 11th August 1993, and finished in black, with black trim and red accents. The car has been in the same family for over 25 years; upon inspection it is a wonderful throwback to the 90s and in very good order both mechanically and aesthetically, but does require some cosmetic work to the Sportline bumpers. The power mohair hood is relatively new, and the history file shows a wealth of bills and invoicing for services and mechanical works coupled to MoT certificates.
Much of the work and care for the car has been since 2013 with RD services in Shepperton which includes its annual in April of this year and an MoT id valid until May 2026, which was obtained with no advisories. The interior is complete and reflects a car of half the age and mileage, and given its specification this is a very desirable modern classic.
