'Dormobile' was the famous trading name of Martin Walter Ltd, who manufactured and fitted camper conversions on all sorts of vehicles, but notably 1960's and 1970's VW vans.The company, Martin Walter, was founded in 1773 and finally ceased trading as recently as 1994. They were one of the first people to cotton on to the idea that a small commercial van could be easily converted for use as a camper.
The first Dormobiles were based on early Bedford vans with factory conversions being carried out in the UK, but the company also sold kits under license to other countries and the VW Camper evolved as one of the most popular models.One of the main visual differences that can be used to recognise a Dormobile against another camper conversion is that the Dormobiles featured a side hinged folding roof as opposed to one that popped 'straight up'.
This particular Dormobile is an early bay window camper that has been completely restored to a fantastic standard by marque specialists Strictly Air-cooled. The shell was bead blasted to bare metal inside and out before being painted in Porsche 911 signal yellow 1973 and VW Pastel white. It's fitted with original VW 1.6 engine that has been rebuilt and tweaked for better road cruising speeds and usability. Also fitted is a Creative Engineering disc brake conversion that is servo assisted.
Tastefully and practically lowered the suspension gives a comfy ride, stiffened anti roll bars not only means this van handles perfectly but we are told does not sway around when lorry's zoom past.
It has been fully loaded and everything you see is included in the sale and better yet it's all almost "as new'! It sleeps four with two bunks in roof and a "Rock and Roll' bed in the rear. It is also fitted with an iPod connection that is mated to an Alpine CD player and sound system. The custom interior was designed and fitted by Calypso Campers and is of great quality. It is fully kitted out featuring a captain's chair that rotates.This camper has 240v mains hook up, sink with electric pump, gas hob/grill and a brand new fridge.
If that isn't enough there is also a brand new, large "drive away awning' that has only been set up once to see how it goes together. A tow bar fitted with electrics, it is also fitted with a Twin Fiamma bike rack that is new and unused. This camper comes with everything you see in the pictures, including all pots, pans, knives, forks, folding picnic table, waste water tank ... in other words.. absolutely everything....
