The Triumph Stag was intended as a luxury sports car, designed to compete directly with the Mercedes-Benz SL. All Stags were four-seater convertibles. A removable hardtop was a popular factory option for the early Stags, and due to the demand, later cars were supplied with a hardtop as a standard.
The Stag started life as a styling experiment and was shaped from a 1963-4 Triumph 2000 that had been styled by Michelotti, and loaned to him by Harry Webster, Director of Engineering at Triumph. Their agreement was that if Webster liked the design, Triumph could use the prototype as the basis of a new model. Webster, who was a long time friend of Giovanni Michelotti, loved the design. The final result didn't have much in common with the styling of the original 2000, but it did retain the suspension and driveline.
The company liked the design so much that they used the styling lines of the Stag on their new Triumph 2000/2500 saloons and estate models of the 1970s.This car was brought and registered by the present keeper in 1977. Throughout its life the car has always been well maintained and is presented in lovely original condition. However it was stored for a number of years due to health issues and during this time the paint work has suffured. The car has also picked up some body work damge on the the pasenger door during this period.
During its life the car has covered 127,000 miles, but only 500 of them since 2004. It has recently been the subject of a thorough re-commission to bring the car back to life. The engine has been rebuilt, when new valves, seats and springs were fitted. The carburettors were stripped and rebuilt at the same time. The radiator, water pump, thermostat and hoses were also replaced.New brake discs, pads, shoes and brake master cylinder have been fitted to the car during the re-commission.
It also benefits from new tyres all-round.The interior has been kept in its original condition so, not surprisingly, the driver's seat does show signs of wear and tear as you would expect on such an original car. Available with the car is the original factory hardtop as well as a rarely used Mohair hood. This is a great opportunity to buy a well sorted and very useable classic and to enjoy it for many years to come.
