Addendum

Please note that this lot is titled as a 1971.

Toyota launched the third generation of its now famous Land Cruiser in 1960. The FJ40 succeeded the “20 series” model and official importation to the United States began in 1963. Within two years, the FJ40 Land Cruiser had become the best-selling Toyota in America. Rugged, reliable, and easily repaired, it was available in several configurations, including a two-door soft-top, two-door hardtop, four-door station wagon, and two-door pickup truck. A bullet-proof inline six-cylinder petrol engine powered US-spec models, while other markets had the option of a four-cylinder diesel as well.

Cosmetically, the FJ would remain essentially the same until it went out of production after the 1984 model year. Functional improvements and upgrades over time shifted the eminently capable Land Cruiser from a bare-bones rock hopper capable of tackling rough terrain to a more accommodating vehicle with creature comforts like power steering and air conditioning for increased comfort on pavement.

This 1970 Toyota FJ40 two-door hardtop was acquired by the consignor out of Arizona around two and a half years ago, showing signs of being enjoyed but not abused. Crucially, it also appeared to be unmolested, the consignor claims, which is more than can be said for a fair number of FJ40s. Finished in a minty shade of green, it oozes vintage appeal with characterful patina throughout. The interior features black upholstery and is equipped with dual, inward-facing, rear bench seats and air conditioning. Powered by a 3.9-liter inline six-cylinder petrol engine, this FJ40 features a three-speed, column-mounted, manual transmission and a front winch. It rides on gray-painted steel wheels with polished hub caps wrapped in BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A knobby tires.

The owner is said to have replaced the clutch and fluids upon acquiring the vehicle and subsequently had it serviced at RM Restorations in Blenheim, Ontario, Canada. In 2021, RM Restorations rebuilt the carburetor, and in 2022 the shop refurbished the winch, windshield-wiper system, speedometer, and other components.

Well cared-for and presented as a solid driver with pleasing patina, this FJ40 Land Cruiser can be thoroughly enjoyed on trails and tarmac as is or provide an excellent starting point for a full restoration.
