It started out as an ambitious project in 1993, the collaboration of Nicolas Hayek, chairman and CEO of the Swatch Group in Switzerland, and Volkswagen to produce a modern microcar of hybrid and/or electric power. However, disputes between both parties led to Hayek taking the project to Mercedes-Benz. Hayek founded Micro Compact Car AG, or MCC, in 1994 with Daimler-Benz and SMH SA, or the Société Suisse de Microélectronique et d'Horlogerie, to build the car that would be known as Smart, an acronym for Swatch Mercedes Art. Interestingly, however, Daimler also fussed over the idea of a hybrid-drive car, causing Hayek and Swatch to abandon the project.
Subsequently, Daimler has gone on to produce three generations of Smart cars, expanding the brand into four doors and cabriolets from the original two door variant. They were proven very safe, extremely efficient, reasonably comfortable, competent performers and popular with a variety of demographics. The third generation debuted in 2014 and sustains today. This 2017 Fortwo Cabriolet has traveled only 52 miles from new and is powered by a turbocharged, multiport fuel-injected 1.0L DOHC inline 3-cylinder engine with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Presented in the eye-catching two-tone color combination of white and Lava Orange Metallic, the fabric top is black.
The interior is upholstered in two-tone orange and black and features a number of unique design and technological elements that easily put Smart at the top of the tech food chain for microcars. Equipped with air conditioning, power windows, power locks, a power-operated top and remote-controlled mirrors, the Smart is a microcar that’s anything but micro. Despite their diminutive size, Smart cars have been well regarded as safe vehicles, thanks to their use of a large number of airbags and their proprietary Tridion Cell, among other safety features. Full of personality, this one has very few miles and presents in like-new condition in a unique color combination that screams fun.
