The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud of 1955 was aimed both at owner-drivers and those who preferred to be chauffeured, or as Rolls-Royce put it: “In the less formal mood of today, however, many who still require all that Rolls-Royce traditionally bestows prefer to drive themselves.” But this was only part of the transition. There was a new, longer and lower chassis on which in-house designers fashioned a roomier, more elegant and sleeker factory body with a lower stance and less formal, gently tapering profile. So successful was the works-produced “Standard Steel” body (with aluminum alloy closing panels to reduce weight) that only a small proportion of owners commissioned custom bodies.
Next, with the Silver Cloud II of 1959, came a far more potent aluminum 6230cc overhead-valve V-8. The final flourish, and most accomplished of all, was the 1962-65 Silver Cloud III. The V-8 was revised and refined further with a 7% increase in power, delivering an output in the region of 220 HP, as seen here. With an attendant 220-pound reduction in weight, the Silver Cloud III was fastest of all with a proven 114 MPH. Other enhancements included individual front seats and lighter power steering.
The interior trim of this extensively restored black 1964 Silver Cloud III Saloon, one of 2,376 produced from late 1962 to October 1965, is accented with burlwood trim and fitted with leather tan upholstery, matching carpets and, of course, picnic tables in the rear, as one would expect. Among the few options offered on the comprehensively specified Cloud III were the factory air-conditioning and power windows, and this example is fitted with both. The Silver Cloud III brought to an end the era of body-on-frame construction at Rolls-Royce (on all but the Phantom V/VI limousines) and with it the opportunity for the dwindling number of traditional coachbuilders to exercise their craft.
In that respect the Cloud III may be considered a final flourish. Rolls-Royce had by then fully acquired the esteemed firms of HJ Mulliner and Park Ward. Thus, the Standard Steel moniker is something of a misnomer, as it was anything but standard, as the Cloud III made extensive use of the hand-crafted artisanship Rolls-Royce had brought in-house. From the final year of Silver Cloud production, this 1964 Rolls-Royce represents the end of an era.
