Named for the coastal road along the French Riviera coast, the Rolls-Royce Corniche was introduced in 1971 as “Simply the best motor car in the world.” Powered by an aluminum block 6.75L V-8 and riding on an all-independent suspension with 4-wheel disc brakes and a self-leveling ride system, the Corniche offered the ultimate in refined road manners and opulent accommodations. Despite its lofty price tag of £17,000—the approximate equivalent of £255,000 today—the Corniche was widely prized by a star-studded clientele that included such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Paul McCartney and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Rolls-Royce continued to develop and refine the Corniche over the years, introducing by turn rack-and-pinion steering, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, bi-level air conditioning and a host of other upgrades through four successive generations, culminating in a limited edition of 25 turbocharged versions in 1995. That appeared to be the model’s swan song, but in 2000 Rolls-Royce introduced a very exclusive fifth-generation Corniche, at the time the most expensive Rolls at $359,900.
RR’s famously smooth and powerful 6.75L turbocharged V-8 engine was tweaked to produce 325 HP and 544 lb-ft of torque through a 4-speed automatic transmission, and the new Corniche brimmed with the full complement of signature Rolls-Royce features. Modeled after the Silver Seraph, the new Corniche’s coachwork featured a power-retractable soft top with power boot, automatic dual headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels and polished mirror caps, all with the famed Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament leading the way.
Finished in hand-crafted Silver Pearl paint, this 2001 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible incorporates a lush leather and wood interior with Cotswold Connolly hides, contrasting seat piping, Wilton wool carpeting and cross-banded wood veneers with RR emblems fitted to the waist rails. Power-adjustable front seats, heated seating surfaces, power windows and cruise control complete this splendid Rolls-Royce classic, which is offered with service records and a clean CarFax.
