Developed in concert with Volkswagen, the 914 succeeded the 911-based 912. Rooted in early design sketches by Hans Gugelot and developed under the guidance of Ferdinand A. “Butzi” Porsche, the 914 featured a taut Karmann-built body, removable Targa roof and midmounted, air-cooled, 4-cylinder engine. Aimed squarely at competing sports cars from Datsun, Fiat, MG and Triumph, the 914 debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show as a 1970 model, to be sold as the “VW-Porsche 914” by VW-Porsche GmbH in Europe and as the “Porsche 914” in North America by Volkswagen of America.

In addition to its fuel-injected, 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed gearbox/rear transaxle, the 914 boasted near-50/50 weight distribution, outstanding handling and remarkable quickness, belying its relatively small-displacement engines, initially 1.7L, 1.8L and finally 2.0L. Accolades included selection as MotorTrend magazine’s Import Car of the Year for 1970. The 914 also remains influential, with its basic essence echoed since 1997 by Porsche’s own Boxster. The ultimate 6-cylinder 911-powered 914-6 was offered from 1970 to 1972 and offered heightened performance with 110 HP on tap in stock form and excellent responsiveness to tuning.

In contrast to the standard 914, which was built entirely by Karmann, the coachbuilder shipped fully trimmed 914-6 bodies to Porsche’s Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen factory, where the cars reached final assembly. In addition to 4-wheel disc brakes, standard 914-6 equipment was held to a higher level than the basic 914 and included three-speed variable windshield wipers, electric windshield washers, chrome-plated bumpers, a vinyl-covered Targa roll bar, and fog lamps. According to Porsche magazine Excellence, as few as 3,351 examples of the 914-6 were produced between 1970 and ‘72.

This wonderful example’s odometer reads just 34,422 miles and has been part of a private automobile collection since 1992. Powered by a midmounted 1991cc flat-6 engine with Weber carburetors, which is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, this compelling 914-6 sports a silver paint finish and black interior featuring articulated factory bucket seats. Other choice highlights include VDO instrumentation and upgraded 16-inch Fuchs-style wheels with polished rims and Pirelli tires. Accompanied by maintenance records and benefiting from long-term collection ownership, this rare 1970 Porsche 914-6 exemplifies the interesting and advanced 914 model hierarchy.
