Porsche GT cars development chief Andreas Preuninger’s experienced team dedicated themselves to turning out the ultimate GT3, the 2011 GT3 RS 4.0, as a final salute to the so-called “Mezger engine” that began life in the 1996 Le Mans Porsche GT1. Preuninger specified the highest-displacement engine ever installed by the factory in a 911, a 4.0L flat-6 that also features the highest output in a naturally aspirated Porsche flat-6, 125 horsepower per liter.
That’s right: 500 horses at 8,250 RPM and 339 lb-ft of torque at 5,750 RPM, conjured by combining the crankshaft from the 911 GT3 RSR race car with titanium connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, reconfigured valve timing and free-breathing center exit exhaust. Creating the über GT3 RS also meant packing the car with the full mix of proven aero, body and chassis tweaks and racing-purposed suspension pieces. A 6-speed manual transmission and huge vented-rotor carbon-ceramic disc brakes were imperative, as are the extra-wide center-lock 19-inch alloy wheels and Michelin Cup tires.
Extensive use of lightweight components, including carbon-fiber engine intake box, front fenders, luggage compartment lid and sport bucket seats, along with weight-optimized carpets, result in a road-ready weight of just 2,998 pounds with a full fuel tank. Finished in special Carrara White paint with red-on-gray accents, the GT3 RS 4.0’s forceful presentation results from its low stance, wide footprint and full-race aerodynamics that incorporate the signature large rear wing mounted at a 9-degree angle. Its effect is balanced by the first front-dive planes ever used on a production Porsche, resulting in 426 pounds of extra downforce at Porsche’s claimed top speed of 193 MPH.
Offered with stereo sound with Bluetooth connectivity, adaptive sports seats with memory and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this 2011 Porsche GT3 4.0 is one of just 600 examples of the car widely regarded as the best 911 ever.
