Introduced in 1993, the Porsche 911 GT2 “widow maker” was developed to homologate Porsche’s entry into GT2 class racing. Spanning production through 2012, the GT2s were markedly more expensive, lighter, quicker and much less accommodating than their 911 Turbo counterparts, lending them more of a race-car feel. The recalibrated suspension and braking systems took some getting used to, but were part of the race-car experience. People with the means could pretty easily take a GT2 directly from the showroom to the race track and begin enjoying competitive driving with few modifications.
In 1999 the 993 variant of Porsche 911 was replaced by the 996 model, and the GT2 would be reintroduced in 2001. Unlike the original GT2, the new GT2 was developed with more road manners and drivability in mind. Exceedingly rare, only about 50 first-gen GT2s were built with even fewer second-gen GT2s seeing production, marking them as one of the most collectible 911s ever built. The new GT2 weighed nearly 400 pounds less than a standard 911 Turbo, the turbocharged 3.6-liter flat-6 cylinder engine produced 477 HP, delivered little turbo lag and drove considerably easier than the original GT2.
Suspension modifications to the GT2 made it 0.78-inch lower than a 911 Turbo, both front and rear, reducing the wind resistance over and airflow beneath the car. This 2004 911 GT2 is one of 24 produced for the United States and has traveled only 28,895 miles since new. In remarkable condition, the car features all the factory-specified GT2 upgrades including ceramic composite brakes with yellow calipers and rear-seat delete. Featuring 18-inch GT2 wheels with Pirelli tires, this rear-wheel-drive car is one of the rarest and quickest Porsche 911s ever built.
