After peaking at almost 73,000 units in 1963, sales of Pontiac’s luxury Grand Prix went into a lurid slide that almost resulted in the model’s extinction, but Pontiac General Manager John DeLorean’s daring once again saved the day when he pushed an all-new fourth-generation Grand Prix into production for 1969. Positioned between the full-sized models and the intermediate Lemans and GTO, the new Grand Prix reinvented the American personal-luxury concept, marrying Duesenberg-inspired styling and grandeur with outstanding performance and road manners.

The Duesie reference even extended to the new car’s trim designations, the J and the SJ, the latter exemplified by this 1970 example sold new at Hilliard Bros. Pontiac in Bradenton, Florida. A lifetime Florida car with 40,158 believed-original miles, it was restored in frame-off, nut-and-bolt fashion and completed in August 2017 to stunning results. Stripped to the rust-free original sheet metal and beautifully refinished in correct code-28 Atoll Blue, it shows off correctly applied Red Oxide primer, factory-style overspray and undercoating, and correct factory markings throughout.

Bored .030 over and fitted with forged pistons and 2.5-inch stainless exhaust, the original matching-numbers 455/370 V-8 retains the original carburetor, intake and cylinder heads and is teamed with the original 400 Turbo automatic and 3.07-geared 12-bolt rear end. Optioned with power steering and front disc brakes, factory air conditioning, power windows and trunk release, remote driver’s mirror, tinted glass, Pontiac Rally II wheels and redline tires, this handsome sport-luxury Pontiac also boasts a freshened front suspension that includes new bushings and ball joints.

The black vinyl roof color is matched in the American automotive industry’s first real cockpit-style interior, which offers a factory Formula steering wheel on a tilt column, optional tach and AM/FM radio, bucket seats, and center console with shifter. This superbly restored 1970 Grand Prix SJ is offered with two build sheets—still affixed beneath the driver’s seat and behind the passenger door panel—and PHS documentation.
