With sales for the Pontiac Grand Prix dropping to an all-time low of just 31,711 units in 1968, it was clear that Pontiac’s luxury performance car was being lost in the shuffle, facing competition from other carmakers as well as its own divisional siblings. For the 1969 model year, the Grand Prix was completely redesigned and reimagined, going from the familiar B-Body platform to an extended version of the midsize A-Body and taking the popular long hood, short deck proportions to new extremes.
Two versions were offered: a base version, Model J, which was powered by a special 350 HP 4-barrel version of the popular 400 CI V-8, which was actually the same engine as the base GTO, and the more upscale Model SJ that included a 428 4-barrel, with a 428 HO available as optional equipment. Both 428s were also available at extra cost in the Model J. A 3-speed manual transmission was standard, with an optional 4-speed manual and a Turbo 400 3-speed automatic both available. The plan worked, and Grand Prix sales surged for 1969, totaling 112,486 units. For 1970, very little changed.
A new vertical-element grille insert replaced the thin horizontal bar design used the year before and a new 455 CI V-8 replaced both of the 428s, now serving as the base engine for the SJ. A total of 65,750 were built. Originally built at the Fremont assembly plant and delivered to a dealer in California, this 1970 Grand Prix Model J was in the original owner’s care until 2012, when it was purchased by the current owner. The odometer reads 18,514 miles, backed by an Ohio actual mile title.
It comes with the 400 4-barrel V-8 engine and automatic transmission, and it also features power steering and power brakes, air conditioning, an AM radio, bucket seats, a console with floor shifter, a driver side mirror, wheel covers with trim rings, whitewall tires and dual exhaust. Though in highly original condition, this Grand Prix was treated to a professional repainting in the original Palladium Silver approximately nine years ago, and it shows very well. The engine compartment has been detailed, and this car comes with the Protect-O-Plate, window sticker, invoice, original paperwork, books and manuals.
