A very rare Canadian delivery, this Bamboo Cream 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix with a Deluxe Saddle bucket seat interior is one of just 90 Grand Prixs exported to Canada and is one of just 32 cars with the 389/425A Tri-Power V-8 engines with automatic transmission that were coded for export worldwide. This was actually a very rare occurrence, as tariffs between the United States and Canada had General Motors producing Canadian-market versions of its Pontiac lines using modified sheet metal and Chevrolet frames and powertrains. It was certainly possible to import a true-blue Pontiac into Canada but it was not a cost-effective option, so very few people did so—just 90 to be exact.
The Grand Prix is powered by a matching-numbers 389/348 HP Tri-Power V-8 engine with dual-snorkel air cleaner, backed by a “Slim Jim” 3-speed automatic with a console-mounted floor shifter. Other features include bucket seats, power steering, a factory tachometer, a pushbutton AM radio and dual exhaust. This Grand Prix also features a detailed engine compartment and underside, as well as restored chrome trim and original Pontiac Motor Division full wheel covers with wide whitewall tires. The Grand Prix was Pontiac’s first foray into the personal luxury market, a segment that was essentially invented by Ford with its 1958 four-passenger Thunderbird.
In its first year of production, Pontiac built a total of 30,195 Grand Prix coupes, with sales greatly increasing in the years to come.
