Even though Pontiac was reaping the benefits of its daring move to release the 1964 GTO, the Wide Track Division had hedged its bet by releasing a sporty full-sized model based on the entry-level Catalina. Known as the 2+2, it began as a bucket-seated variation of the Catalina two-door hardtop coupe and convertible body styles, and any powertrain available in the parent series could be had, from a low-compression 389 2-barrel to a pavement-shredding 421 Tri-Power HO. With the popularity of the GTO as the first midsized performance car, the 2+2 returned in 1965 as a high-performance full-sized machine, only available with the larger 421 CI V-8 engines.

The base 421 4-barrel developed 338 HP, a Tri-Power version made 356 HP, and the top-level 421 Tri-Power HO put out a whopping 376 HP. Transmission choices included a Dearborn Toploader 3-speed, Muncie 4-speed or Turbo 400 3-speed automatic. The 1965 2+2 was also the subject of one of the most celebrated acceleration tests of all time, when “Car and Driver” magazine tested a Royal Pontiac-prepped 1965 2+2 coupe and recorded 0-60 MPH times of just 3.9 seconds, an astounding figure even in this modern era of supercharged performance cars.

This gorgeous 1965 Catalina 2+2 convertible presents in Starlight Black with a stunning metallic red bucket-seat interior with a matching console and floor shifter. It is powered by a 421 with Tri-Power backed by a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Other options include a sport steering wheel, factory tachometer, factory power steering and brakes, factory air conditioning, AM radio and the desirable finned 14-inch 8-lug wheels. The brakes were recently rebuilt and the engine compartment is nicely detailed. This 2+2 convertible presents very well, with correct badging, an aggressive stance and an eye-grabbing color combination.
