With an extensive restoration, a Gold Award at the 2009 Pontiac-Oakland Club International Convention with a score of 384 out of 400, as well as a feature story in the January 2009 issue of “High Performance Pontiac” magazine, the condition of this rare and very desirable 1966 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 Convertible becomes quite evident. It is also one of just 6,383 2+2s built, one of 2,208 built with a manual transmission and one of just 562 cars produced with the top-option WJ-Code 421 Tri-Power HO, which was rated at 376 HP with 461 lb-ft of torque.
Factory-mated to a Muncie M20 4-speed and 3.73-geared Safe-T-Track differential, it is the most desirable powertrain combination in the most desirable body style. The original engine was rebuilt with a .030-inch overbore, featuring correct 093 heads and the date-correct Tri-Power system, factory long-branch exhaust manifolds and an upgraded 2.5-inch exhaust with factory-style resonators. Inside, the original Parchment bucket-seat interior with black carpeting features the factory auxiliary gauge package, tilt column, sport steering wheel and factory console with Hurst floor shifter. It was refurbished with correct-pattern upholstery and door panels from SMS Auto Fabrics.
The factory radio was restored and an auxiliary input was added for MP3 and smartphone hookups. Power steering and brakes were also added during the course of the restoration. The body was stripped to the bare metal and refinished with Barrier Blue two-stage urethane PPG paint, three coats of color and three coats of clear. The trim was either restored or replaced with NOS pieces, and a Hurst decklid badge was added. Other restoration details include the Parchment convertible top and boot, restored 8-lug wheels with white-stripe bias-ply tires, correct trunk mat, spare and jack. The restored original fender skirts are included, as are PHS documents, restoration receipts and photos.
This is a rare opportunity to own a very special piece of Pontiac performance history.
