Pontiac Motor Division performance was available across the 1965 lineup, including this Pontiac Catalina 2+2. The smaller of the Pontiac full-size cars was restyled for 1965 with redesigned stacked headlight assemblies, v-shaped hood and a larger-side sculpted body. The Catalina 2+2 was built for the those who wanted high performance with full-size style, and this particular Pontiac was one of only 8,815 Special Equipment V-8 Catalina 2+2s produced with an automatic transmission in 1965.
This quick wide-tracker underwent an extensive rotisserie restoration retaining its original powertrain, and it comes with its original maintenance book, owner's manual and supporting Pontiac Historical Society documentation. Under the hood is a 421 CI Pontiac V-8 engine with Special Equipment YH-suffix cast-iron block. With a 4-barrel carburetor, high-lift camshaft, 10.5:1 compression, high-performance hydraulic valve lifters, large-diameter valves and dual exhaust, the engine was factory rated for 338 HP at 4,600 RPM and 459 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 RPM. The engine is backed by a 3-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission.
A chrome low-restriction air cleaner, oil-filler cap and chrome rocker-arm covers add a formal look to factory horsepower. Power steering and power brakes join Catalina 2+2 heavy-duty suspension, shocks and stabilizer bar for full-size sport handling. The Nightwatch Blue exterior color blends into the well-appointed Blue Charcoal interior with bucket seats and 2+2 center shift-console as part of the Special Equipment automatic-transmission group. Comfort meets performance with a custom sports steering wheel and tachometer, with a Super Deluxe pushbutton AM radio contributing additional entertainment.
The Catalina 2+2 is outfitted with special heat-dissipating aluminum brake drums and 8-lug wheels equipped with whitewall radial tires to get Pontiac control and power down onto the road. This 421 Catalina 2+2 is a great example of Pontiac full-size mid-1960s muscle.
