Named “Car of the Year” by Motor Trend magazine, Plymouth’s budget Road Runner’s option list grew in 1969. Perhaps the most famous of those packages were the midyear “street racers,” the rare 440 6-BBL versions that were limited in production due to parts availability. The car here is one that was built by Muscle Car Restorations in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, as a tribute to that engineering code A12 release. The A12 cars were more than a mere motor swap, created as full-tilt street-strip combinations with performance parts and limited options.
Frankly, though it looks the part, this replica is actually “better than OEM.” Featured in the October 2012 issue of Mopar Muscle, the restoration including installing a 440 CI V-8 engine complete with the Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and trio of Holley 2-barrel carburetors under the unique rubber-seal air cleaner. A set of -906 iron heads and a 9.7:1 compression make it enjoyable in the 21st century, and the modern air conditioning unit was something never found on the original release. Also enhanced are the exhaust system with headers and an electronic ignition layout.
Still, the driveline consists of the factory’s stout A833 4-speed manual transmission, a Dana 60 Sure Grip rear end with 4.10 gears, stock-style suspension pieces and drum brakes. The exterior has been refreshed in Sable Bronze Poly, a metallic contrast to the pinned, lift-off flat black fiberglass hood with scoop and 440 6-BBL callouts. Inside is the bench-seat interior, floor-mounted Hurst shifter with ball-knob shifter, factory AM radio, Auto Meter tachometer, underdash auxiliary gauge set, Road Runner steering wheel and an OEM dash cluster. Part of the legacy of the A12 was the lack of hubcaps, instead using five chrome lug nuts on 15-inch police car steel wheels.
There are also body paint-matched steel wheels here as well, now wearing modern BF Goodrich blackwall radial tires. These cars were built to be driven hard. This A12 tribute is likewise ready, but it now has further comfort and operational changes that Motor Trend never dreamed of back then.
