The buyer of this 1963 Sport Fury wanted it all, optioning the convertible body with luxury appointments and the race-derived 426 Max Wedge Super Stock, Crossram intake, and 3-speed manual transmission providing the grunt. Finished in Ermine White over red and white upholstery, this is believed to be a '1 of 1' car in this combination of body style, color, and drivetrain.
As its name implies, the 426 Max Wedge Super Stock was developed for the NHRA Super Stock drag racing class. Normally, anyone wanting to go racing specified the big 426 in a stripped-out Savoy of Fury hardtop, so this loaded convertible with Super Stock underpinnings represents an incredible, one-off opportunity.
To handle all that power, this Sport Fury is fitted from new with an 8 ¾" heavy duty rear axle with limited slip differential and 3.91 gears. The rear suspension is beefed up for drag racing, with torque-boxed springs and heavy-duty shock absorbers. It proved quite effective, as the previous owner reported the car ran 12.40 second quarter-mile times at 117 miles per hour – not too shabby for a 3,300-pound luxury convertible!
The previous owner noted that this car was restored to its original specs according to the broadcast sheet, and the project was done at considerable expense. It was subsequently featured in numerous magazine articles and features, the most recent being "Muscle Car Review" in October 2009. As part of the Golden State Muscle Car Collection, this unique and fascinating Plymouth has been very well preserved and remains in excellent condition.
