Station wagons were never considered muscle for the most part; pedestrian in appearance and function, most were family drivers. That has not prevented the vintage models from becoming more and more exclusive and desirable in this era of SUVs and minivans. So when the chance arrives to possibly own one of these surviving examples that was built to be a step above the rest, people take notice. Indeed, the Plymouth Suburban wagon offered here came with a ram-tube/twin-carbureted 413 RB engine back in 1961.
Named the Sonoramic Commando package, the ram design sonically forced the incoming fuel charge into each cylinder at an optimal RPM point; this was the ultimate passing gear of that era and was a dealer-offered package. The subject of a ground-up restoration at Chuck's Classic Cars in Philadelphia, Tennessee, nothing was left to chance when this special project began. The big body has been stripped down to bare metal and hard-to-locate NOS pieces were gathered to ensure it was restored correctly. Styling is unique to this year, with curvaceous chrome touches and gold accents; a two-tone white-and-blue paint scheme beautifully represents this transitional era in Chrysler’s corporate history.
Minor upgrades in the space under the hood are for the sake of easy drivability on the dealer-installed 413/410 HP short ram engine (with dual 4-barrel carburetors, of course), including MSD ignition parts. Behind all this eye candy are a highway-perfect 4-speed transmission with overdrive and a Sure Grip-equipped 3.54:1 Dana rear end, as well as added power steering, power brakes with front discs and new Michelin tires on painted steel wheels. Nonetheless, the old-school look remains thanks to thing like two NOS Hydro-vac brake boosters and the NOS interior materials. The inside is mostly stock, augmented with aftermarket gauges and a booted Hurst shifter.
Complete with restoration photographs, this car represents both an all-around practical driving experience with unique enough styling and options to be a showpiece at a car event.
