The decade of the 1960s saw rapid change in automotive designs, and cars like this 1960 Plymouth Fury Convertible set themselves apart from both what came before and after. Working primarily from the Forward Look cues originated by Virgil Exner, the 1960 Chryslers were a blend of fins and curves, but perhaps most impressive was their sheer size. Significantly, this was the last Plymouth manufactured with stabilizers, as the rear fins were referred to in period sales literature, and the first Plymouth manufactured with Dura-Quiet "unibody" construction. This car has benefited from a comprehensive restoration and is beautiful throughout.
Beneath the hood resides the polyspherical 318 CI V-8 engine, a durable powerplant complete with a gold air cleaner and valve covers. This is backed by the pushbutton-operated TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. This Fury also comes with the company’s well-known torsion bar independent front suspension and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs; 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes are part of this undercarriage as well. Stunning in appearance, the two-tone paint consists of Plum Red primary and Oyster White secondary finishes, coupled with deluxe extra trim that set the top-shelf Fury apart from the more basic Plymouths that year.
In this instance, that included chrome fender skirts, a chrome side spear that ends at the top of the stabilizers, and a faux spare tire that is stamped and trimmed onto the decklid. Once inside, the occupants are treated to rich, red and white upholstery done in a combination of cloth and vinyl materials. This car features a split bench seat, dash-button transmission controls, a space-age speedometer dash above the standard location, radio, heat and defrost, two-tone steering wheel with twin horn buttons and an in-dash clock. The remainder of the exterior trim is in both gold and chrome, with script Fury and Plymouth emblems adorning both sides.
This car rides on a set of premium Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels with spinner centers and wide whitewall tires, a fitting complement to its styling. These big Mopar convertibles have a dedicated following, and owning one of this quality level will give you instant membership into that special group.
