The Fury first appeared for 1956 as a sub-series of the top-of-the-range Belvedere, replacing the latter at the top of the Plymouth tree for 1959. The original Fury of 1956 was a limited edition, high-performance model available only as a two-door hardtop coupé. Power was supplied by Plymouth's 'Hi-Fire' 303ci (5.0-litre) V8 producing 240bhp. By the decade's end the Fury line-up had expanded to four models plus two of the closely related Sport Suburban station wagons.
Throughout the 1950s, American automobile designers had drawn heavily on what might be called 'jet fighter' styling cues – most notable tail fins – and in the Fury's case this device reached its zenith in 1960: the fins were gone when the 1961 range was announced. The 1960 Plymouths are also historically significant as the company's first to feature unitary construction of the chassis/body, marketed as 'Dura-Quiet'.
Dating from the final year of the evocative 'tail fins' period, this Fury is powered by a 317.6ci (5.2-litre) V8 producing 230bhp. The car was acquired from Hyman Ltd of St Louis, Missouri in November 2010 and comes with the bill of sale and a Missouri Certificate of Title. It has since been on static display and will require recommissioning prior to road use.
