As a decade dawned with great anticipation, 1960 found Plymouth introducing new engineering to its model line, calling their cars the “Solid Plymouth For 1960” in marketing materials. This gorgeous 1960 Fury, which was the marque’s luxury model for that year, features all of them. That includes the new unibody construction, resulting in a more integrated chassis design, as well as the continued refinement of the Torsion-Aire suspension design and the first commercial release of the ram induction intake set-up, as well as the high-finned styling that has made it one of the most recognizable models from Detroit.
Under the hood is the B-series big-block Golden Commando 395, the 361/310 HP mill with its Sonoramic Commando intake design, using two long “passing gear” cross-ram manifolds, each with a 4-barrel carburetor. The engine bay detailing includes gold air cleaners and valve covers, while behind it is Chrysler’s push-button operated automatic transmission. This Fury has both dual exhaust and power brakes as well. Outside is the two-tone exterior, with primary red and accenting white tones.
As noted, the finned rear fenders rise dramatically, with a large emblem inset within each, but there are also the gold-toned Fury emblems, the faux spare wheel mount detailed onto the decklid, dual exterior mirrors, and copious chrome trim lines. The interior of this car continues that theme and is full of options. Upholstered in deluxe tri-color red, black and white cloth and vinyl, this car features swiveling front bucket seats with center buddy-style divider, pushbutton AM radio and remote-controlled driver’s sideview mirror. The dash is highlighted with a clock and turned-metal finishes, with a square-design steering wheel completing its classic jet-age styling.
The car rides on steel wheels shod in wide whitewall tires and full wheel covers. The 1960s would be a transitional time for this brand, and this model year heralded that fact, with many of this car’s external features superseded before the middle of the decade. Still showing off the luxury of its era, this Fury is a vehicle that creates an instant impression.
