Styling changes coming into 1960 were dramatic for Chrysler fans, and the car here represents Plymouth's most expensive, top-of-the-line “Forward Look” luxury car for 1960. With just 7,080 Fury convertibles produced that model year, it’s not commonplace to see one of these Virgil Exner-penciled 1960 models, particularly when sporting the rare factory color combination of classic Jet Black with a red and white, two-tone interior and its copious chrome and gold exterior trim intact. This car retains its original data tag showing these colors and other as-built information.
While the factory had not released it yet, this car now features a 440 CI Super Commando-style block with mild upgrades for ease of operation, such as an electronic choke, chrome valve covers and the unique air cleaner. Behind this is the automatic transmission now operated by a floor shift (the pushbuttons remain intact). Chrysler’s well-known torsion bar independent front suspension and live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs is here, and the car is equipped with power steering. The overall look features the period body lines, tail fins and fender skirts, as well as a power-operated black convertible top.
Inside is all 1960s with the floating dash design, a rolling ribbon speedometer, factory, translucent, square-format steering wheel, and rolled and creased edges with light fluting. Of course, the outside decor is unmistakable with its script emblems, two body-length trim lines, dual outside mirrors, quad headlamps and large, fin-inserted, round medallions. The final piece is matched wire wheels with wide whitewall tires—fitting for a car of this magnitude. A restored car with light adaptations, this deluxe Plymouth convertible immediately relates the maturing of the "Forward Look" design, still evoking the era of 1960.
