The postwar 1949 Plymouth redesign with its three-box design and roomy interior set the tone of the brand as a features leader in the low-priced field. At the top of the Plymouth lineup for 1950 was the Special Deluxe. The topline Plymouth featured bright metal front and rear window frames, front door armrests, dash-mount clock and cigar lighter at no extra charge. This 1950 Plymouth Special Deluxe convertible underwent a photo-documented body-off nut and bolt restoration three decades ago and has been stored in a climate controlled garage since. The new for 1950 body and sheet metal were stripped to bare metal during the restoration.
Plymouth proudly touted the ease in replacement of its bolt-on fenders in 1950 and as such genuine new old stock fenders were located and installed. The original hood, bumpers, and the majority of the trim including the Special Deluxe badging were returned to factory fresh condition. The all steel body was prepared for paint with epoxy primer and finished into single stage Candy Apple Red hardener-catalyzed acrylic enamel. Driver and passenger side spotlights add Special to Deluxe. The convertible top opens to reveal a matching interior that were both finished by Bob's Top Shop.
The well appointed Special Deluxe interior features an optional AM radio with antenna, heater with bright finish controls and dual windshield wipers for all-weather visibility. The Plymouth L-head inline 6-cylinder engine was professionally rebuilt by Riteway Automotive. The 218 cubic inch L6 was factory rated for 97 horsepower at 3,600 RPM and is backed by a 3-speed manual transmission with an overdrive unit from a 1953 Plymouth. The exhaust manifold was split for dual exhaust with resulting improved performance and sound by Fector's out of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
