The magic that earned this 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe First Place at the 2009 Detroit Autorama is in all the details that qualify it as a masterwork by any measure. Every facet is an exercise in excellence, beginning with precision bodywork executed by Chop Shop Customs in Woburn, Massachusetts, with final assembly by Xtreme Customs in Slatersville, Rhode Island. Noticeable modifications include frenched headlights and LED tail lights, a frenched antenna and a remodeled hood and grille.
Emblems and exterior handles were shaved, but enough chrome and brightwork was conserved to maintain a strong period look, which is also emphasized by the Medium Blue Pearl paint that must be seen in person to genuinely appreciate its depth and iridescence. Rather than give in to the standard practice of installing a modern V-8, the builder chose to retain the 230 CI flathead inline-6 engine and endow it with a full complement of vintage speed equipment.
The comprehensive makeover by George Asche of Oil City, Pennsylvania, included a rebuilt bottom end, custom-grind performance cam, finned aluminum head and air cleaner, dual Weber-Carter downdraft carburetors, a Fenton intake manifold and split exhaust header feeding a 2-inch custom exhaust with cutouts, an Eddie Meyer fuel-distribution block and a beehive oil filter. This vintage-flavored mill connects with the car’s Currie Ford 9-inch 3.25:1 rear end through a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive, the main features in the highly detailed undercarriage that also incorporates Fatman 3-inch drop front spindles, Posies leaf springs and tube shocks and 11-inch 4-wheel disc brakes.
Beautifully finished classic Plymouth hardware is used inside, with blue and maroon vinyl upholstery tastefully rendered with ‘50s-style pleated inserts and complemented with dark-blue carpeting. Finished in lustrous polished and burled walnut, the stock dash houses Hot Rod Air, Classic Instruments gauges in the original openings and a powerful stereo system driving a Kicker subwoofer in the trunk, which has been upholstered to match the interior. Rolling on custom Wheel Vintiques wheels with hand-painted checkered-flag motifs and wide whitewall radial tires, this prize-winning 1949 Plymouth will impress all who appreciate high artisanship.
