“Engineering magic greets you right from the start. You don’t grope for a starter button or pedal. You don’t pull on a choke. You simply turn the ignition key—and the engine starts.” These words came straight from postwar Plymouth marketing materials, circa 1946, touting one of 50 improvements over the prewar automobiles. After World War II, automobile manufacturers resumed car production as fast as the government would let them, and Plymouth was one of the first out of the gate.
Like so many other carmakers, Plymouth basically offered buyers a refreshed 1942 model, but marketed more than 50 improvements beyond the prewar cars and called them DeLuxe and Special DeLuxe, the latter offering additional comforts and accessories over the standard DeLuxe. The engine remained largely the same as the prewar engine, a 218 CI inline 6-cylinder with a downdraft carburetor linked to a 3-speed manual transmission. It was a tried-and-true powertrain that was robust and moved the cars with relative ease. This 1948 Plymouth is a Special DeLuxe convertible in Maroon with a two-tone maroon and white interior boasting a split-bench seat all covered by a black convertible top.
Equipped with both a heater and defroster, twin spotlights, amber fog lights and bumper guards, it’s easy to consider this one of the better-equipped Plymouths of the era. Rolling on Firestone Deluxe Champion whitewall tires wrapping steel wheels decorated with bright, full wheel covers, it’s an absolute show stopper. The door panels are covered in maroon vinyl, and the brightwork inside and out reflects brilliantly. A fabulous classic that can be enjoyed, drop the top at dusk and breathe in the first of the evening cool as the day becomes night, maybe imagining those early days when America eagerly looked forward to a bright future.
More than 50 improvements, including simple twist-key ignition start, help define this Plymouth.
