Hidden in a barn for 47 years, this 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe Woody Wagon retains its original wood in spite of a nut-and-bolt restoration. One of only 5,594 built in 1941, a downdraft carburetor feeds the 201 CI inline 6-cylinder engine spinning a 3-speed manual transmission. The Cream paint gleams, offset by the expanse of brightwork, the black vinyl roof covering and, of course, the exquisite woodwork adorning the flanks. Imagine building one of these back in the day—all the handwork involved in sanding, tongue-and-groove joinery, grain matching and aligning, and affixing the wood to the steel structure. They truly are masterpieces.
This one features a third-row bench seat, chrome driver’s mirror, chrome hubcaps and trim rings trimmed in red decorating body-color-matched steel wheels, and a red interior that lends a lot of verve to an already vivacious automobile. The dashboard is a testament to Art Deco styling, with gentle curves, subtle chrome trim, a tan gauge cluster and fabulous fonts entirely reminiscent of the era. The white steering wheel is not only stylish, but also helps keep temperatures to a minimum.
Of course, Woody Wagons are always associated with the beach lifestyle and surfing, but there is something remarkably elegant about this Plymouth, an aura, a look, a conservative, upscale image that seems charmingly allergic to the clichés. It would be perfect during the Holiday Season with a Christmas tree attached to the roof, though. The P12 Special Deluxe was the top of the line model for 1941, the P11 one step below offering more utilitarian features and comforts. Interestingly, the economy was so strong in 1941 that Plymouth sold more upscale P12s than P11s in all body styles. Plymouth ads proclaimed, “The One for ’41,” and indeed, Plymouth sales reflected that confidence.
Today, though, finding a P12 in good condition can be a challenge, let alone a Woody sporting its original wood in such condition as this one.
