  • VIN ANNOUNCEMENT

With the Depression easing, in 1935 Chrysler’s Plymouth division boldly introduced a completely new lineup with many advanced design and engineering features, including all-steel bodies and stronger new frames. The styling was fresh, too, and 80 years later it still impresses in custom-built street rods like this 1936 Plymouth coupe. A unified concept and skilled execution were obviously the two prime considerations in completing this wonderful street machine. It is based on an all-steel body and the original box frame that has been modified to accept modern driveline and suspension components.

The Mopar content does not end there, for inside the engine compartment’s close quarters is a contemporary 5.7L Hemi engine cranking out an honest 345 HP. Capped with a sharp aluminum engine cover, it features electronic fuel injection fed by cold-air induction, with a March serpentine belt system driving the alternator, air conditioning and power-steering units. It’s a neat job of packaging, one that makes room for the aluminum radiator and electric fan, Wilwood master cylinder and chromed booster. A 5-speed automatic transmission with overdrive completes the drivetrain along with a GM 10-bolt rear end with 3.73:1 Positraction differential.

A chromed 3-link suspension and coilover shocks are used at the rear, with Heidts independent suspension and power rack-and-pinion steering up front and power disc brakes at all four corners. Shaved and dipped in glowing Prowler Orange base/clear coat paint, the car rides on 20-inch Chip Foose alloy wheels and ultra-low-profile tires. The artfully executed custom beige interior features power windows and locks, remote door and trunk releases, air conditioning and heat, a tilt column and Dolphin white-faced gauges. Power, style and comfort—this Mopar street rod has it all.
