“Don’t follow the leader – drive it!” So proclaimed Packard in print ads for this very model of car – the Eighteenth Series 1940 Packard One-Eighty (Super Eight) Touring Sedan; this is thought to be the Model 1807 on the 138-inch wheelbase. The Packard ad went on to declare that “Here is a car so far ahead that anything else seems far behind.”
“Long, speed-streamed, it is completely new from end to end. With its unusually long wheelbase – this car was created especially for you who prefer a five-passenger body-style with a delightful, restful roominess almost unknown in cars of this day. This member of the distinguished new Packard custom Super 8 One-Eighty series is a veritable palace of luxury.”
Lithe, with a narrower radiator, distinctive hood side louvers, bullet-shaped headlights and beautiful radiator grille-work left little doubt in it unmistakably being a Packard. The platform is eye-catching yet filled with wonders that your eye can’t see; Packard engineering at its then finest.
Powered by the smooth and responsive 356-cid, 160-hp straight eight-cylinder L-head engine, the Packard has a three-speed manual transmission and a great choice of equipment that adds to the special nature of this car. The exterior is adorned with optional dual side-mounted spares that are covered and have sideview mirrors, Packard-branded driving lights, optional bumper guards, Packard Cormorant radiator mascot, subtle red pinstripes, plus a traditional internal trunk with a luggage rack. Coker Classic wide whitewall tires and factory wheel trim makes for a most handsome Full Classic as recognized by the esteemed Classic Car Club of America.
