Packard decided by August 1941 to release its entirely restyled line for 1942, and the big news was the Clipper. The Packard offerings, except for two convertible coupe models, were redesigned with a rounder, more streamlined appearance and were based on styling cues by designer Howard “Dutch” Darrin. This restored 1942 Packard Clipper represents the most expensive of the Clipper Series, and only 85 were built. Furthermore, this Packard is one of only two remaining examples known to exist.
The double-drop frame of this Packard is based on a 127-inch wheelbase chassis equipped with 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes supported by painted pressed-steel wheels with chrome-plated, one-year-only wheel covers and white sidewall tires. The engine is the 356 CI Super Straight Eight engine first used in 1940, producing 165 HP at 3,600 RPM. The transmission is a column-shifted 3-speed manual, operating through an Electromatic clutch. This Packard is finished in correct Cavalier Maroon and includes original paint code options sheets from Sherwin Williams and ACME. The chrome-plated front and rear bumpers are equipped with guards and accessory chrome-plated end tip protectors.
The body features standard rear fender skirts, and the front is equipped with covered Junior Trippe driving lights and smooth headlight lenses. The car is equipped with dual Packard script back-up lights as well. The interior is trimmed in tan broadcloth and brown wool carpeting, and the instrument panel is equipped with dual heater system controls and a Philco pushbutton radio. A center folding antennae control is mounted above the windshield. The odometer reads only 77,183 miles. This Packard is a full CCCA Classic and includes a Premier Senior badge.
It also comes with documented ownership history and useful information, including a list of updated and reconditioned parts from Neil Torrence of Arcadia, California, original Packard Service Manuals, advertisements, periodicals and photos, an original Clipper Master Parts Catalog, owner’s Manual, World War II ration cards, Accessory Data Book, a Philco Radio Manual, Aero-Drive Instruction Tag, original Borg Clock Instructions and a gas cap key. This Packard has won many awards and will award its new owner with years of enjoyment and pride.
