With the success of the 280ZX demonstrating there was interest in a comfortable sports GT car with a lengthy list of standard and optional amenities, Nissan redesigned the new 300ZX for 1984. Following the folded paper design motif, the 300ZX offered dramatically sharp creases, unique pop-up headlights and a flatter beltline. While it used many of the 280ZX’s chassis components, magazines of the day were impressed the new 300ZX handled considerably better than the 280ZX, most attributing the advantage to the better weight distribution afforded by the new 3.0L V-6 engine that replaced the inline-6.

The more compact design of the V-configuration engine allowed for much of the engine weight to settle between the front axle and firewall, providing better balance. To celebrate 50 years of business, Nissan built 5,148 50th Anniversary Edition 300ZX Turbos, with an additional 300 built for the Canadian market. Finished with special two-tone metallic silver and black paint, the Anniversary Edition also received a special body kit that nodded at things to come on the refreshed 1986 300ZX design, unique badges and embroidery, specialized wheels with gold detailing and other details that set it apart from other 300ZXs.

Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L SOHC V-6, this example shows just 9,487 miles on the odometer and is equipped with the 5-speed manual transmission and bronze-tinted T-tops. An exceptionally well-equipped car, the steering wheel features pushbutton controls for the Clarion eight-speaker AM/FM/cassette stereo system, while dials on the console allow passengers to feel the music through eight seat-mounted speakers, thanks to Nissan’s Bodysonic amplifier system. The factory digital dash includes readouts for engine efficiency, a MPG computer with a range-to-empty indicator, dual trip odometers, a clock, a compass and a G-force meter with positive and negative acceleration readouts.

The black leather interior further features specialized 50th Anniversary embroidery, and passengers are coddled with a six-way adjustable driver’s seat with inflatable bladders, power windows, power locks, air conditioning, power brakes, power steering, cruise control, simulated wood inserts, heated and power-operated sideview mirrors, a rear defroster and wiper, headlight and windshield cleaners, auto-dimmer interior lighting with door handle controls, an anti-theft system and voice warning system with alerts for left/right door ajar, parking brake on and lights on.
