British carmaker M.G. Car Company Limited (MG stands for Morris Garages, distributor for Morris cars) produced some of the most popular, memorable and most spirited European sports cars ever. A glance at this 1955 MG TF-1500 roadster, perhaps the quintessential vintage British sports car, drives the point home in unmistakable fashion. From its rakish chrome grille and louvered hood sides to the genuine wire wheels, sweeping fenders and dual-carbureted inline 4-cylinder engine, the TF-1500 is every inch a classic. An update of its predecessor the MG TF-1250, the TF-1500 was a descendent of the MG Midget that dated back to 1936.
The TF-1500 introduced improved, slightly more streamlined bodywork and greater performance thanks to its 1466cc inline 4-cylinder engine. Output grew from 57 HP to 63 at 5,000 RPM, and torque was up 17 percent, making the TF-1500 a substantially stronger performer. A 4-speed transmission keeps the driver in control of the driveline, as befits a sports car of this vintage. Recently restored, this exceptional TF-1500 features lovely British Racing Green paint and tan leather interior. A matching soft top and tonneau cover are included to protect the car and its occupants from the weather.
A treat awaits inside, where the tan leather seats and door panels play perfectly off the traditional green exterior. A center pod of three octagonal instruments houses a large, easily read speedometer, rev counter (tachometer) and a center instrument for oil pressure, water temperature and electrical amps. Steering wheel is a genuine drilled-spoke, wood-rimmed wheel that helps make this a fine example of the breed. Production ended after less than two years, with only 3,400 built, leaving the TF-1500 as the highest evolution of one of MG’s most loved designs, and this captivating roadster as a representative of the model long on integrity and flair.
