Mercury introduced the Monterey line as its own model in 1952, serving as an upscale offering to more clearly compete with the likes of Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Dodge and DeSoto. In 1953, a Monterey station wagon joined the lineup, offering customers refined styling and the woody option package. This year also marked the final year of production for the famous flathead V-8—a new, more modern 161 HP overhead valve Y-Block V-8 was introduced in 1954. This 1953 Mercury Monterey Woody Wagon is unique in that it features a flathead V-8 while ushering in a new era of style and amenities for a more upscale clientele that Mercury sought to entertain.
Benefiting from a professional, body-off restoration, this rare, eight-passenger example is finished in white and hosts a number of unique extras, including the driver’s side spotlight, fog lights, fender skirts, a wood roof rack and red-painted steel wheels with wide whitewall tires and full-width wheel covers. The interior is upholstered and painted in black and white, and it features rare Allstate air conditioning and an original, functional AM radio. The dashboard features control levers on a flat surface flanking the speedometer, largely mimicking something that might be seen on a motorboat or a large aircraft.
The flathead V-8 exhales through dual exhaust and is backed by an automatic transmission. Fitted with power steering, the car was built in Los Angeles, California, and is said to have spent its life in Denver and California.
